Our Journey

Rooster & Hen Resources started from a personal need that quickly turned into a professional mission.

When my father-in-law passed away under hospice care at home in 2013, he was survived by a three-year-old son, my husband’s half-brother. As an educator, I searched far and wide for storybooks to help him cope with the devastating loss of a father. However, to my surprise, I found very little on the topic of hospice care that was relatable to our situation.

There was a big gap in the market. That needed to change. So, we did something about it. We wrote our own book - based on real people in real life.

What began as a Kickstarter campaign to create a children’s book, evolved into workshops, seminars, and art-filled memorials, hearing families yearn for stories that spoke to their own personal experiences that were not well-represented in available resources and content.  More needed to be done. And so, Rooster & Hen began.

P.S. The name Rooster & Hen has multiple meanings. First, it came about because Rebecca was born the year of the Rooster on the Chinese zodiac and she grew up with elders who emphasized that part of her identity. Second, Rebecca likens growing an organization to a chicken coop. To build a strong, solid, yet sensitive company, it requires a lot of advocating and protecting (rooster) as well as a lot of nurturing too (hen). Along the same vein, our communities are stronger when everyone thrives and when we learn to support each other, laugh and cry together… through thick and thin.
