Graphic Novels for Young Kids (Chicago Park District)

Graphic novels have become a beloved part of school literature—and for good reason! They boost literacy, spark a love of reading, and offer a vibrant, visual way for children to express emotions and ideas.

This summer, Rooster & Hen Resources is excited to partner with the Chicago Park District to bring the magic of graphic novels to Day Camp at Holstein Park! With our deep passion for storytelling and art-making, this creative collaboration is a natural fit—and we can't wait to share it with the campers.

Designed especially for our youngest campers (grades K–2), this activity uses simple structures and visual prompts to guide kids in creating their own graphic stories. Each child will go home with a short, personalized graphic novel they can continue to build on—sharing their thoughts, dreams, and everyday adventures in a fun, expressive format.

Creativity Camp and Focus Group

Creativity Camp and Focus Group

Summer is an opportune time for fun in the sun and longer projects to return to over and over again.

Creativity Camp is holding space for just that–art invitations that beckon young minds to think, explore, and make. For many youth, school can often have a variety of ways of showing your work and proving you learned something. With school out, summer opens to just imagine and express– no grades, no rubrics, no metrics. The only things we consistently request are: respect, kindness, and safety. This summer’s campers have in store different mediums to experiment and experience process art all on their own terms. From fiber arts and printmaking to inventions and problem-solving, campers tap into both their curiosity and creativity. We provide the materials and inspiration while they bring their own voice and style.

We are also creating art kits and creative resources to bolster our library of offerings and who better to ask than kids themselves! So as kids try new things, we track their feedback so we can make SEL products that make a difference!
