Graphic Novel Workshop for young kids (Chicago Park District)

Graphic Novel Workshop at Holstein Park Day Camp (Younger)

Date: July 2-3, 2025

Venue/City: Chicago

Audience: Grades K-2

Summer is a bustling time for camp and we had the joy of partnering with the Chicago Park District to bring a special graphic novel workshop to the youngest campers (grades K–2) at Holstein Park Day Camp. With our shared passion for storytelling and creativity, this collaboration was a natural fit—and the results were inspiring!

Over two engaging days, we guided over 80 campers through the process of creating their very own graphic ‘zines. We kicked things off by learning about the parts of a book by Author Ms. Rebecca, then moved into brainstorming sessions full of imagination and heart. From there, the campers jumped into writing and illustrating their own unique stories.

We were amazed by the creativity and thoughtfulness on display—stories ranged from summer vacations and travel bucket lists to space-faring cats, heartfelt tributes to beloved pets, and even a book about Atlantis, the Lost City! On the second day, everyone put finishing touches on their work and took turns sharing with the group. Campers listened with care, clapped with enthusiasm, and showed incredible pride in their creations.

Seeing these young authors light up as they expressed themselves was a true highlight of our summer. Their voices matter—and we’re honored to help them tell their stories. We can’t wait to do it again! If you’d like a young author program like this at your organization, email us!
