Storytime with Author Rebecca: Exploring Feelings Through Books and Art
Storytime has a special way of bringing children together—and that’s exactly what happened when our very own Ms. Rebecca, wearing her children’s author hat, visited a first-grade classroom in Chicago for a meaningful read-aloud and artful conversation.
A room parent reached out to us after a student in the class attended his first funeral, hoping to help normalize big feelings and experiences for the whole class. Of course, we said YES.
Together, we read Moving In Forever, pausing along the way to reflect, share, and connect. The children noticed details, expressed feelings, and asked thoughtful questions—conversations filled with empathy, curiosity, and care.
Following the story, the class took part in an expressive art activity, drawing people or places they miss. These didn't have to be related to loss through death—they could be about friends who moved away, a favorite house, a city once visited, or family we don’t see as often. Every connection mattered, and we made space for them all.
Art and storytelling can open hearts, build community, and help children process the world around them—with gentleness and creativity.
