Through art and story, we rediscovered the power of play through our Side Door Approach™ during our time in Taichung and Puli, Taiwan. When direct communication doesn’t work, a more relational, casual way might.

Together, we practiced building bridges to the youth we serve and also ourselves by offering invitations to create and connect before seeking answers to hard questions.

Often, underneath the tough moments is a loss. Bad grades might mean the loss of status or the privilege to play sports. Taking care of elders may mean the loss of personal space or how the relationship once was. The death of an important person can mean losing the one who knew everything about you—and loved you anyway.

In Taichung, we spent time helping the helpers—educators, counselors, and caregivers—consider how play and creative expression can open doors to connection with the youth they serve. In Puli, we turned our attention to caring for the caregiver. Through conversation and art-making, participants reflected on what they need, who can support them, and how dreams can still be nurtured even while caring for others.

Our time together was filled with sharing worries and hopes, creating art, and remembering that our identities extend beyond the roles we carry. In the face of grief and responsibility, it becomes even more important to nurture belonging, build trust, and make space for care—including care for ourselves.
