“Grief in the Asian Context: A Collectivistic Approach”
Audience: Certified Child Life Specialists
Length: 45–60 minutes (presentation + Q&A)
Format: Live virtual session hosted on Zoom
We had the privilege of joining Child Life Circle for a conversation with child life specialists about how culture shapes the way grief is experienced, expressed, and supported. Together, we explored how collectivistic values, so common across many Asian and Eastern families, can sometimes feel at odds with Western-based approaches to grief care.
One of the most meaningful parts of our time together was simply naming how new this topic felt for many in the room. There was openness, curiosity, and a shared desire to better understand the families and communities they serve. While not all families are the same, we focused on some general similarities that are often seen in other collectivistic cultures, not Asian alone. Through dialogue and reflection, we considered what it means to create spaces that feel truly welcoming and inclusive—places where different ways of grieving are acknowledged and respected.
We left encouraged by the humility of every helper, who was willing to learn, ask questions, and expand their lens. We hope it creates more room for families to feel seen, supported, and understood. And all the while, we the helpers feel more equipped to create connections and welcome everyone to our circle.
